What inspired you to pursue music?
I loved it. I loved working on our ranch, and I fell in love with the idea of singing songs that made people feel – just as the songs I loved made me feel. It just seemed natural to me.
How would you describe your musical style?
It’s traditional country content with a modern feel and a lot of pedal steel (my favorite instrument!)— It’s the sound of the Modern Cowgirl. 🙂
What artists do you look up to right now?
Miranda Lambert has a voice that makes you feel things. Maren Morris is charting new ground for country music. Kacey Musgraves is writing songs that are brilliant, and Kelsea Ballerini is just about the cutest thing ever and kills it live. Those are the artists I am looking up to right now. I am so proud to be a woman in country music right now!
You recently released your new single “Mexico”, what has been your thought about the reaction of the new single?
I love that people are loving it—it’s a real story for me, so to have people saying how much they love it and that their husbands and boyfriends are even singing it while walking around the house makes me so happy!
Can you tell us the meaning behind “Mexico”?
I wrote it a few days before Christmas with my bud, Will Bundy. I had the title “Mexico” written in my notes, and he knew my fun personal story about Mexico. He said, “Jenna, if we write that song, it has to be about the real thing.” The chorus is basically my “Mexico story” from when I was 18 put to a melody. We wrote it so fast because of that – it was awesome.
Are you performing “Mexico” live anytime soon?
I have some shows being confirmed that are coming up soon, and one in Dallas on September 20th! I can’t wait. Stay tuned here: http://www.jennapaulette.com/tour/
What does it feel like to perform your own music live in front of your supporters?
The craziest thing about it for me is that my songs and experiences are alive and well outside my own reasons for writing or singing them. It’s insane to think people will have the own memories, some I will never know about, and my music will be a part of them… it’s so cool to think of it like that!
How do you want your relationship to be with your supporters?
Electric. I want them to feel like we’re in this together and that they are the reason I do what I do, because… THEY ARE 🙂
What social media platform do you use most to stay connected to your supporters?
Instagram, I love stories! I love the artistic aspect of an Instagram feed… it’s so fun! Tap that follow button @JennaPaulette 🙂
Are there any other projects in the works you can tell us about?
I have my first EP coming out this fall! I can’t wait for y’all to hear it. I’ve worked really hard to make it feel and sound like me.
Do you have any last things you want to tell your supporters?
I love y’all—even if I don’t know you, you give what I do purpose, and I can’t do this without you. Thanks for everything!
