Washington DC-based, soul/funk project, Rhymes Band ft. Summer Dennis, announce their new dynamic and sultry video
How did you get started in the music business?
Summer: I’ve been singing at church and taking music lessons all my life. When I was in college I used to sing at all the night clubs. I ended up opening for artists like Black Eyed Pea and Bubba Sparxx when they came to campus. I’ve been performing in venues in the DMV ever since.
What inspired you to start releasing your own music?
Summer: I really enjoyed writing poems my whole life. I’ve always been a writer. When I was a teen I used to play the piano before school in the health classroom and people would challenge me to make words to the songs. Pretty soon I learned to put my poetry to the melodies stuck in my head, and I’ve been doing It ever since.
Bill: We felt that we had a style that was an attractive blend of several genres and wanted to see if everybody agreed… lol.. we’d have done it any way
How would you describe your musical style as an artist?
Summer: i would say it’s very emotional, edgy, and soulful
Bill: Fast songs, in-ya-face dance music slow songs, emotional stories from a woman’s perspective. We feel like all our songs are stories or at least messages.
What artists do you look up to right now?
Summer: Beyoncé, Cardi B, Whitney Houston, Rihanna, Prince, Stevie Wonder
Bill: There’s a range. I still love Vernon Reid and have incredible respect for the innovation of George Clinton. I also love Rhianna’s musical diversity and ability to bring many styles to her audience.
The music video for your latest single “Storm” was just released and looks like it was a lot of fun to make. Any fun moments while on set?
Summer: I think the funniest set moments were when we were shooting the cry scenes. The guys were so shocked that I was crying so hard but as soon as the scenes ended I would burst into laughter. I told them It was just my Gemini twins showing off.
Can you tell us more about “Storm” and how the idea for the song came about?
Bill: The song envisioned how love relationships often mirror the cycles of nature. In this case, the way there can be a clean new beginning after the destructive energy of a storm or hurricane. We tried to paint that picture with words and music
Are there any other fun projects in the works you can tell us about?
Summer: We are about to release the first single for our new album. We are currently putting finishing touches on the album.
Are you planning to perform live anytime soon?
How do you want your relationship to be with your fans?
Summer: I want to be able to be transparent with them. To me transparency is really important, it helps people to feel.
What social media platform do you use most to stay connected to your fans?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years in your career and personal life?
Summer: I see myself on tour. I want to be a touring artist and see the world while singing my music.
Any last things you want to tell your supporters?
