Mark & The Tiger Chats With TMI About His Artist Name, His Biggest Game-Changer In His Career So Far, & More!!
Hi Mark! Great to have you here!
So happy to be here! Thank you!
How do you balance artist life and normal life?
Not very well! I tend to find myself fluctuating between being totally engrossed in my art and then completely ignoring it and being focused on other aspects of life. I’m striving for balance!
What are the essential qualities that make up a good musician?
I think the essential quality of any “good” professional is a willingness and desire to constantly be learning and growing. It’s surprising how many people are just not teachable. I didn’t realize it was a skill until recently.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Work harder than you think you need to! But don’t worry about what anyone else has to say. You are perfect and enough and your voice matters!
How did you come up with the name, “Mark And The Tiger”?
It originally started as an inside joke with myself. I was obsessed with tigers and one photo of a tiger that my friend had in particular. I started calling myself Mark Tiger. It became a bit of an alter ego as I moved through my life. When I met my husband he called me out on using Mark Tiger as a shield because I didn’t think I was good enough as I was. He was completely right! So I switched to Mark AND the Tiger. I wanted to keep the tiger spirit while still embracing myself as I am.
What do you see as the most important habits of successful people?
Tenacity and grit! I think the most successful people don’t let rejection or failure get them down. They roll with the punches and keep going anyway!
What has been the biggest game-changer in your career thus far?
I think my attitude about my music has changed. I found I was making music with the intention of being “successful” or “famous” and because of that everything I did felt flat and disingenuous. Now I’m trying to just embrace the music I want to make for myself. I’m making it because I have to make it, not because I want it to be something. Ironically, as soon as I shifted that mentality things have started to expand and grow!
