Hey Lydia! So excited to be chatting with you!! How excited are you that your new single is finally out into the world?
I’m incredibly excited. This is my favorite song I have out in the world right now.
Where did the inspiration for the song come from? I wrote this song about that feeling when you are first starting to get closer to someone. You have this intense urge to share everything with them — all your dark secrets and past traumas — but you also know that it might scare them off. Having had cancer and now living with the long-term health effects in my early 20s made me a darker, funnier, more serious person. I want someone who wants that, all of it, and not just the polished version I bring to the table at the start.
Any fun moments while creating/recording the song?
I’ve been so busy lately that I realized on my way to the studio I hadn’t written any harmonies for the song. I had to write them on the subway and walking down the street and recording into voice memos on my phone. I probably sounded like a crazy person, but fortunately it’s New York so everyone has seen things way more bizarre in a given day. Funnily enough, the session went really well and we basically did the whole song in one shot.
What do you hope your supporters will think of the new song? I hope it feels like a page out of your own diary.
What’s the process of writing one of your songs? I try to be organized and disciplined about writing — inspiration can be fickle, and as a professional it’s important to set aside time and energy to be creative. But in this case, the song kind of appeared and slapped me in the face. It demanded to be written. I wrote it on the bathroom floor at about 2am and then polished it
Where did your love of music come from? I don’t know. It came from the ether — it was always there. I loved going to church and hearing the choir sing as a kid. I remember getting my first pair of headphones and not taking them off for days. I knew every word to the songs on the radio and wrote theme songs for the characters I loved in kids books.
Will there be a music video for your new single? We’re releasing a short video exclusive to Spotify next week! I just got the first edit back today and it looks jaw-dropping. Let’s just say ‘rhinestones’ for now.
Any other fun projects in the works you can tell us about? I’m currently preparing for a few shows throughout the fall. I’ve been working really hard with my band and we’re getting better and better all the time. I’m also currently writing songs for 2020 releases!
Do you have any last things you want to tell your supporters? Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to listen. I can’t wait to take you on this journey with me.
