Luke Judy is an actor, singer/songwriter, and half of the Indie Rock Duo Duplexity. The band, formed with sister Savannah Judy, just debuted their first EP Billboards. Here is an TMI exclusive about the new EP!
Welcome to TMI Luke – we are thrilled to talk with you today. Congrats on the upcoming release of your new EP, Billboards. But before you spill the tea on the new record, can you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Luke Judy, and I am a 16-year-old musician and actor who lives in Beverly Hills, CA. I am a member of an Indie rock duo with my sister, Savannah Judy called Duplexity. I am a vocalist and I play rhythm guitar!
You are a multi-hyphenate talent in the entertainment industry. Out of all the things you do, from acting to music, which is your most favored?
I love both acting and being a musician. But if I had to choose just one, it would be music. Music has always had a special place in my life. When we were little, we attended The School of Rock, and we would perform rock songs live and it was always an amazing experience. My favorite part of being a musician is making music and performing your original songs live. Making music is something I’ve always wanted to do. I am so happy that we formed Duplexity, and we are able to start performing our own songs live.
What was your inspiration behind the new single?
‘Demons’ is our newest single. It is the third single from our debut EP ‘Billboards’ the inspiration behind the song is that we wanted to write a song that was about raw, negative thoughts and feelings. Something that everyone could relate to at some point in their life, but they don’t necessarily talk about. There are so many people every day struggling, especially lately. We wanted to shine a light on the fact that it’s normal to have these feelings, instead of just sweeping them under the rug and acting like you are always ok.
What made you decide to release a song?
I honestly can’t remember the moment that I knew I wanted to make music. I just always remember knowing someday I would. Savannah and I have taken voice and instrument lessons most of our life and it’s the natural progression to form a band and eventually write songs. I do remember what made us form Duplexity. We were in a garage band with some of our friends and we had a small performance. It was after that performance Savannah and I both knew it was time to form a duo. Something clicked that night and the idea for Duplexity was born.
Can you share some of your favorite lyrics in the song?
My favorite lyrics in ‘Demons’ are: “Stuck inside an ambiance of pressure filled with anger, everything I do is looking better down on paper”. This lyric really paints a picture in my mind about someone stuck in a loop with their own thoughts and emotions and all that pressure is making them go crazy, they feel like a fraud and just want to feel ok.
What is your writing process when making new music?
Our process varies when we write each song. Some of the songs on our debut EP Savannah started writing a long time ago and we revisited them as a team to make them more relevant. Some we figured out the instruments first then we figured out the melody followed by the vocals. Sometimes we have an idea for lyrics first and then you start on the instruments. I would have to say it just really depends on the song. Right now, we have several fragmented songs that I can’t wait to finish.
Do you have specific “go to” instruments you like to use in your songs?
I love all instruments; in a perfect world I would know how to play them all. But, because I don’t, I always start with either drums or guitar. Most of the time I will have a guitar riff in my head that I think is cool, so I write it down then record it, and then add drums, and other times it’s the other way around. I write down a cool drum line and then I write the guitar riff. It just really depends on what inspired me first.
What do you hope fans feel after hearing the new record?
I hope most of all, our music gives our generation a voice! When people, especially young people listen to ‘Demons’, I hope they feel that they are not alone. That negative thoughts, stress and anxiety are normal human emotions. I also hope that instead of hiding these struggles they find the courage to talk to their family or their peers about what they are struggling with. That this is the way to deal with negative thoughts and eventually leave all that stress and pressure behind them.
