Can you introduce yourselves? Tell us something about each of you.

Hey, I’m Carly! Something about me is that I am crazy good at Mario Kart. My lucky charm is to use Mario every single time! Oh- and I’m the worst cook in the world.

Hey, I’m Martina! Something about me is that “The Office” is my favorite TV show. My favorite character is Jim- he’s sarcastic just like me.

You guys started your music career at a very young age, What inspired you guys to pursue music?

We’ve been playing piano for 12 years and writing songs for the past three. When we were in 6th grade, Martina broke her back and that caused her to gain weight. When she came back to school, she was bullied.

As a result of this experience, we wrote a song called “Make Me Happy,” that is all about being the person that brings happiness into your life, and not letting other people control your self-esteem.

The song came out from a week-long songwriting camp, where we got to bring in our own song and have other musicians play on it. At the end of the week, we went to a studio to record the song as part of the camp. The producer who was recording the song ended up calling us two weeks later and offering a record deal. That really gave us a start in the industry. From there, we started writing more, producing our own music and learning how to perform by going to coffee shops and playing for hours at a time. We also started sharing our music on social media and started connecting with fans as we realized a lot of people were connecting to our music.

What is it like being in a duo with your sister?

It’s the best! We couldn’t do it without each other. We both bring different things to the table and the hard parts of the music are easier when you have your best friend by your side.

How would you describe your musical style?

We like mixing music from the past with what we think music in the future will sound like. We write pop music, but we love mixing real instruments with computer-generated ones to create a completely fresh and original sound. We also love clever rhyme schemes and telling a story either about our lives or other people’s, while still having catchy hooks and bangin’ melodies.

What artists do you look up to right now?

There are so many amazing artists we look up to. Right now, we’re crazy in love with the Beatles, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Shawn Mendes. They all have amazing music and really interesting career paths.

Can we expect any new original music soon?

Absolutely. We just released “Block His Number” and there’s more to come. Stay tuned. 🙂

Can you tell us about your new video that came out June 1st?

Our new music video is for our latest single “Block His Number.” The video concept is our own brainchild! We wanted to go with bright colors and incorporate elements like the sun chairs, palm trees, and pool floaties to set the stage for summer but with a twist for an even cooler vibe.  At the same time, we wanted to incorporate vintage elements like the rotary phones and ice cream cart to hint that boy trouble is nothing new. We ended up getting all of our own props, styling ourselves, and helping to edit it! It was amazing to see our concept come to life and to share it with the world!

How did the idea for the video come about?

When we were writing the song, we kept seeing the color scheme and scenes in our heads. We wanted to recreate those images and scenes in the video.

Do you guys have a creative say in your music and videos?

We have total creative control in all of our music and videos. We write and arrange our own music, too. When we produce our content, we are working with everyone involved. In terms of the videos, we style ourselves, do our own hair and makeup, conceptualize everything and have a hand in editing. Everything that has our name on it was created by us.

Are there any other projects in the works you can tell us about?

We are gearing up for new music to be released and we’re really excited about that! We’ve also partnered with United Way of Metro Chicago to give songwriting workshops to kids in the local community.

You guys are heading to Vidcon at the end of the month. Can you guys tell us about what you have planned when you’re here?

We are so excited to go to Vidcon for the first time! We are looking forward to meeting other creators, collaborating, and taking it all in.

Do you have any advice for aspiring music artists?

You have to be willing to put in the work. There will be times you want to give up and don’t see anything happening. That’s ok- it’s a process. Also, don’t change yourself or your songs for anyone or anything. No matter what promises someone makes, you have to stay true to yourself and listen to what your gut is telling you. In the long run, that’s what will make your successful and happy.

Do you guys have any last things you want to tell your supporters?

If there’s something you want to do and you love, go for it. Be willing to work hard and understand there will be many people who don’t understand what you’re trying to accomplish so they’ll try bring you down. That’s ok- that means you’re doing something right. Keep doing you!
