Water Tower Band Chat With TMI About Their Musical Journey

Welcome and thanks for your time.  Tell us a little about yourselves and your musical journey.

I got started in music at age 5.  I was dancing so hard to a cassette tape in the corner of my kindergarten class in Oregon (1991), that I knocked the chair over behind me.  I didn’t realize I had knocked it over until the teacher came over and took the headphones off of my head.  Instantly I was transported back to reality.  That was the first time I was spellbound by the intoxicating effects of music.

How did you get started in music and how did you know this is what you wanted to pursue full time?

Later at age 12 I was in Singapore learning how to skateboard (1996) and my skate crew and I decided to take a break from the heat.  We went into the jungle behind my house and played keyboard/guitar/bongos.  This was the first song-writing experience I ever had.  My friends and I were playing the same chords and making up lyrics.  We spent a couple hours doing it, and then everyone had to go home for dinner.  I experienced an extreme sense of “coming down” when they left because all of a sudden, we were not able to continue playing the song we made together.  This moment changed my brain forever.  I had had my first taste of a group-induced sound catharsis experience.  From then on, addiction to this feeling became my driving force.

Who are your greatest influences as a band and why?

Our greatest influences as a band are:

1. Rancid, because they are a family and a team who live their music as one.

2. Bill Monroe, because A. He is amazing, and B. He toured around the US and played every little spot he could.

3. Old Crow Medicine Show- They are the busking kings.

4. Woody Guthrie- OG busking king.

5. Aphex Twin- Cuz just wow…

We would love to hear more about what you have been up to this year so far?

This year we were busking full-time, 6 am – 6pm for Los Angeles traffic.  We started busking full-time in Portland around 2013 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azxvgGzkrGI&t=3s) but the rain caused us to move to the sun.   Once the Rona hit, we were forced to finally move indoors.   So we have spent the last few months learning about the internets.  Honestly we had no clue how to use the interwebs before this year.  We used to have to pay exorbitant amounts to have others fix out internet issues, but now we are figuring it out ourselves since we have to.   This whole experience has really changed our lives for the better and helped connect us to fans/best friends we would have never met out on the road (literally and figuratively).

For someone that hasn’t heard your music or caught you live – share more about your music and what your live show is like.

Our live show is all about the energy that the crowd gives us.  Every audience member is our personal hero because they are the reason we get up and sing every day all day. This is what we call #watertowerlife.

Any pre-show rituals you do as a band before you play live?

Our pre-show ritual is deep breathing and laughing AND yawning.
