Exclusive Interview With Social Media Influencer: Colby Brock

Hey Colby hope your doing well!

You and your friend Sam Golbach started a Youtube channel together a while back and it’s definitely changed your guys’ lives. Why did you guys start the channel in the first place?

We get asked this a TON, and believe it or not, we started our social media for the sole purpose of spreading a message. It has all been a plan since the beginning. This message is conveyed through our website called “The Life Project.” We wanted to get an audience so that we could teach them what we had learned through our past experiences.

Both of you recently started your own personal channels, so you could post more for your supporters. What do you think is gonna be the main difference from your personal channel to your group channel with Sam?

The main difference will probably be the style of videos. I do a lot of vlog- comedy videos while the “Sam and Colby” channel is more of everything.

What is the process to make a “Colby Brock” YouTube video? How do you come up with the ideas for your YouTube Vids?

It’s extremely random. I usually just think of something funny or crazy to film and then do it… as simple as that. There’s no real brainstorming going on to be honest.

What are your favorite videos to make?

Vlog type for sure.

Are you wanting to expand your social media career into something more like acting or singing or both?

We definitely want to make it past the “social media world” but into more things like inspirational speaking and starting new businesses.

When did you realize that social media could turn into a career for you?

As soon as we started making money. We knew that this had a lot of potential and was an opportunity that we needed to go after.

What’s your thoughts on the growth of social media?

I don’t really like it. You have to be doing the craziest things or having insane “click bait” in order to get people to view your stuff. I liked it a ton better when you could just completely be yourself and do what YOU thought was entertaining.

What’s your friends and parents thoughts on your career in social media?

Friends and parents are both very supportive! They didn’t seem to understand at first, but now that we are in Hollywood with no help (financially) from anyone, they are pretty proud of how far we’ve come.

What’s the best thing that’s come out of this career?

Definitely the fans. I get to interact and talk to thousands of people everyday… and I think that’s really special.

What’s your biggest struggle in this career as a social media star?

Probably just getting sucked into the “number game.” And by that I mean always worrying and looking into stats of how well you’re doing on social media. (How many views, subscribers, etc.)

What did you want to be when you were younger?

A business manager of some sort! But honestly had no idea how I would get to that point.

How would you describe yourself in 5 words?

Confident. Determined. Caring. Compassionate. Creative.

How do you spend most of your free time?

Hanging out with friends mostly!

You recently went to Boston for the FanRave 2 year Anniversary. How did it go?

It was great! Loved meeting the fans and the show went really really well.

Are their any other projects or events in the works you can tell me about?

We are in the process of making our “Life Project” a more universal website for everyone (not just our fans) to use. That’s going to be insane.

What was the craziest fan encounter you have had?

Fans have found where we stay in hotels and sleep outside our hotel rooms. That’s pretty crazy.

What social media platform do you use most to stay connected to your supporters?

I definitely use twitter the most to interact with fans.

Have you come up with a fan base name yet?

Not really… we just like to call ourselves a big family.

What youtuber has influenced you the most? – Cameron Dallas, Tyler Oakley, etc.

Before social media even started, I was really influenced by Jc Caylen and Jeydon Wale. They were a big reason for me wanting to get some sort of fame, because I saw how much power they had at such a young age.

Like youtube, you also have a huge following on Musical.ly. Has it been hard to grow an audience of over 700K on musical.ly?

Not really! We don’t consider ourselves “musers” or anything, we had a lot of help from our Vine career.

What’s your process on making a musically?

Don’t consider ourselves as “musers.”

Whats your favorite song to do a musical.ly to right now?

How has this whole social media career experience been?

Absolutely unimaginable. It’s just crazy. Wouldn’t change what I do for anything in the world.

What goals have you set out for yourself in your career and in your personal life?

Starting my own business. Spreading my message to as many people as I possibly can. Make money while I’m young and influence kids to do what makes them happy.

What impact do you want your social media presence to have on the social media world?

I want people to be more confident in themselves. There are so many negative things that can tear people down, but really, if you learn not to give a crap about that stuff then you will be much happier. I want people to find me inspirational and funny. Someone they can look up to.

If your life was a movie, what would be the title?

Holy Crap, What Just Happened.

Who would you want to play you?

I would definitely play myself.

Many people in our generation are starting to create content to post on youtube. What advice can you give my followers about how to make yourself standout on such a big platform like youtube?

Be yourself! Be consistent! Keep posting no matter what.

What has been the biggest achievement of yours so far in this career?

Creating “The Life Project” hands down.
